One little girl carries a message of hope across America
“Does anyone see a 12-foot little girl?”
It didn’t take long to view Little Amal strolling along the sidewalk in front of the Washington Monument. The larger-than-life puppet of a 10-year-old Syrian girl traveled to Washington, D.C., this September as part of her Amal Walks Across America tour.

In the fall of 2023, Amal will walk 6,000 miles and visit 40 towns and cities in the U.S., spreading an important message of hope and welcome. She invites those she meets to become Welcomers by learning more about sponsoring refugees who are seeking safety and stability in the U.S.
When she arrived at the Washington Monument on Sept. 17, Welcome.US and a gathering of Welcomers—representing the tens of thousands of Americans across the country who are supporting newcomers—greeted Amal and shared gifts of friendship to help her feel at home in the nation’s capital.
Families warmly welcomed her with cheers and Welcome.US hearts. Young Welcomers gifted her with a homemade bracelet, a traditional gift of friendship. Amal then shared her own message of support on the #BeAWelcomer lightbox and continued her walk to spread her message to a new destination.

A warm welcome
Welcomers, visitors, families, and the Welcome.US and Welcome Corps teams warmly greeted Little Amal as she arrived at the Washington Monument.
Amal’s journey from Boston to San Diego perfectly captures the energy of millions of Americans who are welcoming newcomers with open arms and welcoming hearts, as they begin new lives with hope and courage in communities across America.
You, too, can welcome newcomers. Learn more about Little Amal and the opportunity to welcome newcomers just like her.
