On May 30, 2025, the Supreme Court granted the Trump administration’s emergency request to terminate humanitarian parole status for individuals who arrived in the U.S. through the Processes for Cubans, Haitians, Nicaraguans, and Venezuelans (CHNV) sponsorship program. The ruling means humanitarian parole status for people sponsored through the CHNV program is terminated and the government can begin deportation proceedings, unless they have secured protection from deportation through another legal status, such as a pending asylum application.
Humanitarian parole was granted to at least 531,000 people from CHNV countries: 110,000 Cubans; 211,000 Haitians; 93,000 Nicaraguans; and 117,000 Venezuelans. Impacted individuals may be prioritized for removal from the U.S., as described in the Department of Homeland Security memorandum on expedited removal issued on Jan. 23, 2025.
Welcome.US made the following statement:
“At Welcome.US, we have seen more than 2 million Americans raise their hands to welcome newcomers who have been forced to flee their homes and sought refuge in the United States. We work directly with these patriotic Americans and the newcomers they support as they participate together in these lawful, orderly, and successful programs. They followed all the rules, arrived here with work authorization, and have been contributing to their communities as employees, entrepreneurs, and neighbors. The countries from which they fled remain deeply unsafe. Welcomers are devastated to hear that the people that have become family to them are now at risk of being returned to violence and persecution.
“At Welcome.US we remain committed to supporting these Welcomers and the newcomers they welcomed.”
