Policy changes directly impact the Processes for Cubans, Haitians, Nicaraguans and Venezuelans (P4CHNV) and the Welcome Corps; impacts on Uniting for Ukraine (U4U) remain uncertain

WASHINGTON, D.C.— Welcome.US CEO Nazanin Ash issued the following statement on the executive orders signed by President Donald J. Trump today, which ends the private sponsorship programs for Cubans, Haitians, Nicaraguans, and Venezuelans (the P4CHNV program) and suspends the U.S. Refugee Admissions Program (USRAP), including the Welcome Corps private sponsorship program; the impact on the Uniting for Ukraine (U4U) program is unclear. These programs are the means by which Americans have been able to legally and safely sponsor newcomers in need of refuge to come to the United States, including Afghan allies.

“In just three years, over 2 million Americans across all 50 states and 12,000 zip codes have raised their hands to privately sponsor newcomers through safe, legal, and orderly pathways. They are Americans from every part of our great American tapestry: Republicans and Democrats, veterans and members of our diverse diaspora communities, faith leaders of every denomination and everyday Americans acting on their compassion, generosity, and desire to serve their communities and people in need. They have all stepped up as Welcomers, offering newcomers safety, opportunity, and the chance to thrive, and in doing so helped to transform their communities. Through these acts of welcome, they have saved thousands of lives and found purpose and connection, rediscovering what it means to be an American and living out our ideals of freedom and opportunity.

“The new administration’s decision to end the P4CHNV program and suspend the Welcome Corps program indefinitely leaves Americans and the newcomers they hoped to sponsor with uncertainty about their safety, security, and freedom. These include people fleeing violence and persecution from authoritarians, dictators, and violent groups threatening peoples’ safety.

“Welcome.US is committed to supporting American sponsors and the newcomers they have welcomed and hoped to welcome. We will work together to navigate these changes and provide the resources, guidance, and community support needed during this uncertain time.”
