Welcome Fund Launches ‘All of Us’ RFP to Expand Community Engagement to Welcome Afghan Newcomers
Washington, D.C.—The Welcome Fund, a project of Welcome.US and administered by GoFundMe.org, announced today the launch of its first request for proposals (RFP), which will commit $3 million to the support of national, regional and local organizations that broaden community participation in resettlement of Afghan newcomers.
“Organizations across the country are working to mobilize support to help our new neighbors meet their initial needs,” said Nazanin Ash, CEO of Welcome.US. “The Welcome Fund’s next set of grants seeks to harness and enhance national, regional and local organizations in their work to broaden community participation in resettlement.”
“The Welcome Fund was created by Welcome.US to support the development and expansion of welcoming communities across the country as they come together to meet the needs of our new Afghan neighbors. These efforts are intended to strengthen our collective capacity to welcome broader populations of newcomers seeking safety and refuge in the U.S. over time.
In November, the Welcome Fund announced $8.3 million worth of grants to nearly 30 organizations supporting the arrival and housing of Afghan evacuees.
“Community organizations will continue to play an integral role in ensuring newly arriving Afghans have access to vital services and support during this period of transition,” said Cecilia Muñoz and John Bridgeland, co-chairs of Welcome.US. “Refugees contribute so much to our communities, and the Welcome Fund is committed to maximizing every resource to advance innovative solutions and address the challenges these families might face so that they can rebuild their new lives here to their fullest potential.”
The Welcome Fund is making $3 million available for this RFP round. It expects to distribute at least half of the funds through this RFP in community-based grants of between $10,000 and $50,000, and will consider substantially larger grants for organizations mobilizing large-scale community participation at regional or national levels.
“Supporting community-based efforts to assist newly arrived Afghan evacuees is critical to build welcoming communities across the U.S.” said Ngoan Le, Chair of the Welcome Fund Advisory Committee. “Thanks to the generosity of many donors, we will be able to recognize and enhance the capacity of organizations working to help Afghans coming to their communities.”
To be eligible for funding, organizations must:
- Operate in a U.S. community that will receive Afghan newcomers (defined as including Afghan refugees, parolees, SIVs, or evacuees).
- Are a 501(c)(3) organization or have a fiscal sponsor. If you are in the process of getting a fiscal sponsor, you will be able to note this in the application.
- Participate in three facilitated discussion forums that uplift grantee project activities over the one-year grant period with Welcome.US, and engage in the Welcome Fund community listserv.
- Engage and broaden involvement of community members to address the needs of Afghan arrivals.
- Track their impact and report results to the Welcome Fund.
This RFP builds upon the work of the “Mobilizing America for Refugees Fund” which launched in October with the support of the Schultz Family Foundation, Stand Together Foundation, and The Starbucks Foundation, in partnership with Welcome.us.
The Welcome Fund will accept proposals from December 13, 2021, until 5 p.m. ET January 21, 2022. Awardees will be notified on a rolling basis through March 2022. We hope to launch a second round in spring 2022.

About Welcome.US and The Welcome Fund
Welcome.US is a new national initiative built to unite, inspire, and empower the American people to welcome and support those seeking refuge here, starting with our new Afghan neighbors. In partnership with local and national resettlement agencies, Afghan American organizations and leaders, refugees, community sponsorship groups, nonprofits, businesses, faith-based institutions, veterans, universities, three former Presidents and three former First Ladies, Welcome.US is the single point of entry for Americans who want to get involved and support those who are starting new lives in the United States.
A project of Welcome.US, the Welcome Fund provides philanthropy, major donors, and the private sector an effective and coordinated national mechanism that will enable communities to not only support those seeking refuge, but also to build a movement of welcome that extends beyond this immediate crisis. The Fund is informed by the strategic vision of Welcome.US and led by an advisory committee comprised of leaders who bring lived experience, refugee resettlement expertise, grantmaking knowledge, and other resources that are essential to executing the Fund’s mission. Welcome.US does not make recommendations on individual grants.
