“Everybody who works here is super friendly to the regulars and people who come in. It’s a different atmosphere here, I feel like I’m somewhere in South Africa.”

Lynn’s story:

I’ve lived in this neighborhood in Brooklyn for over thirty years. I’m a regular here at Madiba, I love it. Everybody who works here is super friendly to the regulars and people who come in. It’s a different atmosphere here, I feel like I’m somewhere in South Africa.

My great grandmother on my mother’s side moved to New York City from Philadelphia in 1918, almost one hundred years ago. My father was born in Springfield, Illinois and came to join his mother in New York in the 1930’s. I’m so happy that I was born in New York City. Queens was beautiful and quiet in the 1950’s and 1960’s when I grew up. My mother, grandmother and great-grandmother told stories about these neighborhoods in Brooklyn where we are now. I learned more about the history and I fell in love with these areas. This is where I belong, I love it here.

When I first moved to Brooklyn, I felt a stronger connection to my mother and grandmother. I could see the remnants of the trolley cars that they would say they would take the Green Avenue trolley to downtown Brooklyn. A friend in California recently went through her mother’s pictures and sent me great photos of my mother with her friends in 1950 here in Brooklyn.

Fabian’s story:

I’m from Mexico, I don’t speak much English. I really like working here at Madiba, the people I meet here are great.
